How to build a skincare routine for beginners

No 12-step chaos, no shelf full of products you don't need. Here's exactly what your skin actually requires — and in what order.

Starting a skincare routine can feel overwhelming — algorithms full of 47-step mornings, serums with unpronounceable ingredients, and influencers who seem to have been born with a glass-skin gene. The truth is much simpler. Your skin needs very little to thrive, and starting small is always the right move.

The three things your skin actually needs

Every effective skincare routine — regardless of skin type, budget, or age — is built on three steps: cleanse, moisturise, protect. Everything else is optional.

A gentle cleanser removes the day without stripping your skin barrier. A moisturiser seals hydration in and keeps your barrier intact. SPF protects against the UV damage responsible for 80% of visible ageing. Get these three right, consistently, and your skin will improve.

Morning routine (5 minutes)

Rinse with water or use a gentle low-pH cleanser if your skin feels oily overnight. Apply moisturiser while your skin is still slightly damp. Finish with SPF 30 or higher — this is non-negotiable, even on cloudy days. That's it. You don't need more than this in the morning.

Evening routine (5–10 minutes)

In the evening, a proper cleanse matters more. If you wear SPF or makeup, double cleanse: first an oil cleanser or micellar water to break down product, then your regular cleanser. Follow with moisturiser. Once your skin is settled — usually after 2–4 weeks of consistent basics — you can add a single active ingredient like a low-percentage retinol or a gentle exfoliating acid.

Choosing products without losing your mind

Look for fragrance-free formulas, especially if you're new to skincare or have sensitive skin. Ignore marketing claims and look at ingredient lists. CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, and The Ordinary all offer effective, affordable options without the noise.

Patch test anything new. Introduce one product at a time, waiting at least a week before adding another. If your skin reacts, you'll know exactly what caused it.

What actually makes a difference

Consistency beats complexity every time. Using a basic three-step routine every single day for three months will do more for your skin than an elaborate routine you abandon in week two. SPF applied daily is the single highest-impact skincare choice you can make. Drinking enough water, sleeping enough, and managing stress all affect your skin more than any serum.

Start simple. Stay consistent. Add complexity slowly and only if your skin needs it.
